Despair, Hopelessness, Failure

My dear readers,

As I look around on the net and in real life, I see a lot of people with despair and feelings of hopelessness and failure. Just this night, I heard that two people on Wall Street had commited suicide recently. :(

And I do not want that to happen to you! No, no! Nor do I want you to have such awful feelings right now.

You may think things are so terrible right now for you. You might believe you have nothing to live for. You may have made mistakes. Lost money. Out of a job. Needing a place to live. You are so depressed and feel that just when it can't possibly get any worse, it does!

Do not fret!

I can guarantee the sun will shine once again for you!

Believe it or not, the things that you are facing right now, are actually just crappy hurdles and will not last forever, like you may seem to think!

Really!

You will overcome them and can get through this!

Here is how:

Do not sit there in self-pity. Get up. Get out. Move - physically move your body. Your brain will get inspiration when you are moving. Idle time often leads to negative thinking and depression, so get moving!

Talk to someone! Yes! Anyone! Lean on them right now. It is O.K. to do that! It is O.K.!!! Friends and family, support groups, reach out and talk to someone. In real life or even on the Internet, there are people you can talk to.

Ask for help! Ask! There are so many people out there that can help you, but not if you do not ask for help!

Read. Surf the Internet for resources for your current problem. You would be amazed what is out there that can help you and the people that want to help you. Read!

Accept any mistakes and move forward! We are human and we all make mistakes. There is no shame in that - only a learning experience.

Know that everything you are going through right now is temporary! Accept your current situation, and realize that it is only temporary!

Do one thing at a time - baby steps - so you do not feel overwhelmed. Make a "To-Do" list. The feeling of crossing something off the list is such a wonderful and terrific boost to your brain!

Swallow your pride. Throw your ego out the door. They are stupid things anyway, in my opinion. Get a job at MCD or WMT. Work two jobs if you must right now. Remember, that things are temporary! Look on Craigslist.org for jobs or housing. It is free! You can do it! Sell something too, if you are in need of cash. Look around - what do you have? Sell it! You can always buy it back again if you truly need it later.

See a doctor for medicines to help you with depression. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that!

Look around you and really "see" what you have. There are people who love and have understanding for you. You have your health. You have your brain. You can do anything with that!

Remember your goals, your hopes, your dreams. Think about them. Visualize them. What do you need to achieve them? Write it down on a piece of paper and tape it to your bathroom mirror.

Know that there are a gazillion people in the world that are in way worse shape than you - food, disease, housing, wars! Reflect on that. What do you take for granted that others do not have? Replace your self-pity with empathy for others.

Smile! Right now - smile! Doesn't that feel good? Yes, it does. :)

THERE IS NO SITUATION that cannot be ennobled by achievement or enduring.
    -- Goethe

YOU CANNOT PREVENT the birds of sadness from passing over your head, but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair.
    -- Swedish proverb

Yes, the sun will shine once again for you! Now, get out of here and do what I mentioned above.

Go.

I think you miss the point, that most people in that deep depression you speak of are there through no fault of their own. They played by the rules, did as the ancients (pundits and government) told them they should do. Bought a house, invested for their retirements, only to have it all STOLEN AWAY.

Go work at McDonald's or Walmart? Try paying a $1800.00 a month mortgage on what they pay you, try paying your $4-500 dollar a month electric and heat bill on that. It cannot be done.

Americans on Main Street do not need cheerleaders right now, do not need mindless worthless pep talks, they need real solutions, and they need a hand up...something that does not seem to be anywhere in sight as Bush, Paulson and Congress take our money and hand it out like candy on Wall Street.

Mr. Penstinger,

Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to post your opinions.

I disagree with you.

Everything that happens to us is caused by us.

Played by the rules? If they did so, and could truly afford the house they bought, they would not be in foreclosure.

And if people can not afford the mortgage, they need to move into something more affordable.

I take issue with your "mindless, worthless pep talks"!

*stamps foot*

Why are you so negative?

ick

btw, I see your "About Me" page states by you:

"Finding and reinventing myself at almost 51"

Why is that? You had to start over? Like many people are doing now...

Thank you.

I do not proclaim to be a therapist, however there are many people that are mentally down right now and in need.

Always nice to see that there truly is light at the end of the tunnel.

Stop by more ofen.

Great stuff! Thanks for putting such a positive message out there for others to stumble across -- we can't have too much hope right now and we all have to do whatever we can help each other through to the other side!

good stuff there TG. you do a great service for all. and i for one truly believe in the power of the people to overcome!

Trading Goddess said...

Kurt,

You are welcome and I agree that we should all be helping others.

So many people forget to ask for help, whether it be from shame or embarassment. A person should feel neither of those in asking for help, imo.

Thank you for stopping by and posting your comments. It is very much appreciated!

Yes, the power of the people. Amazing it is when it comes together!

If it were but true that we are totally in control of our own destiny. If three homes in the neighborhood go into foreclosure, and that reality drives down the property values of the other homes, is that THEIR FAULT? Is it their fault that their equity is their homes is suddenly gone as a result of this reality?

Look at the construction trade. Wages have been descimated, and American workers laid off in favor of CHEAP Illegal Alien workers. It that those workers faults?

Wall Street got greedy, and as a result many boomers 401K's have all but been WIPED OUT...is that their fault?

See, a lot of people are hurting right now through no fault of their own, but instead as a result of the actions and greed of others, and that is not fair. Is it fair that the average American taxpayer is being forced to take on $18,000 each in shared pain to bail out Wall Street fat cats?

As to reinventing myself...unlike many who have no choice but to reinvent who they are, to scale down the lifestyle that has been stolen from them, by reinvention is totally by personal choice. I got bored with what I had done for some 20 years, decided it was time for a change.

Trading Goddess said...

Royce,

If a person owns a home, and 3 homes around them go into foreclosure, yes, I agree that the property value of the remaining person's home goes down. I am sure that person is aware of his neighbors and area before he/she/they moved in.

Constructon was doing fine until this subprime mess, with the "aliens". They are in bad times as well right now.

As for "bailing out" Wall Street, I thought that the President of the United States basically told everyone to vote for it to pass.

If you do not like it, maybe you should rethink what party you will be voting for in a couple weeks.

Do you realize that people are killing themselves?

What help do YOU offer them? None, that I see, and yet you call me a cheerleader. Well, I AM a cheerleader to help others not commit suicide. What is wrong with that? Sheesh!

As to you reinventing yourself, I don't know what you were like in your past life, but this "new you" seems to be a very bitter person who offers nothing but bitching and no solutions nor help for others.

I wish you luck and much happinesee. It seems to me you will need it.

Best regards.

Well I happen to like your pep talk, because your actually trying to add a positive vibe to the world instead of adding opinionated negativy like some other people (royce). And yes we are "usually" the cause of our own ruin, education can prevent you from being a victim b/c there are actually some people making money right now while others are standing by losing money and pointing fingers instead of searching for their own solution. You can stand by and wait for someone to hand you a solution or you can go out and find one.

TG please ignore people like royce he's not even worth your time or energy he's just looking for someone to wipe his feet on and the only people looking for someone to wipe their feet on are dirty people.

Jim Punkrockford said...

For me some of these responses remind me of what is wrong with America; people who don’t take personal responsibility for the things that happen to them. If the value of your house goes down because of foreclosures in the neighborhood, sure that was not your fault, but so what; it is your house, live in it. If you bought it thinking it was an investment, you guessed wrong, your bad. If your 401K is getting hammered and you are blaming fat cat wall streeters you should not have been investing in stocks in the first place. Look people, wake up and take some responsibility for your own future. You would be surprised by how well off you could be if you have a little foresight, especially right now.

TG: Those were thoughtful, kind, upbeat words. Thank you for taking the time to post it. Your advice has been very helpful in today's market and I use it quite often. I like your style of humor mixed with a few deep thoughts.

On another subject: Technically, the DJIA has some down targets of 9200, 8200, 8000. I think reading the top patterns this is defining a future trading range for years to come. The 45 degree angle off of the base in 1988 shows that we will find the bottom at 7000. That is only the testing level.

while the economy and the financial markets certainly are in a bad situation it could be worse, you are still alive and living in the best country in the world, even with its warts, no where on this planet do so many have so much and with all of that which they have they also have opportunity, be kind to others during this time of difficulty, be compassionate toward those in need, as an individual demonstrate the very best in the human race and we will all get through this albeit a little less financially well of

You may disagree with me but I disagree with you. You, obviously have never been in a similar situation yourself. When someone is broke and homeless, he can't just jump on the internet. Also, I have never seen anything free on Craigslist, as a matter of fact, most things are too expensive. Also, I would be willing to help someone myself if it wasn't for the fact that 99.9% of men and 100% of women have substance abuse problems as well as being thieves and untrustworthy, unskilled and unreliable.

fortune8 said...

I would like to sell myself for $100/hour. Are you buyihg TG?

Trading Goddess said...

Anonymous,

You have no idea what situations I have been in. None.

Suffce it to say, that although I have never owned a home, I have been through extremely difficult situations, with and without my children.

You obviously do not do any due diligence, or you would know that you can use the Internet at the local library for free.

You also obviously have not spent any time on Craigslist, or you would know what it offers. How about freecycle.org? Have you actually looked for things? I doubt it. Again, you would rather be negative. You see, I think it is you that has never been in a dire circumstance. Yet, anyway.

As far as your "thoughts" on mankind, I find that sad. You are obviously in need of some help so that you can live your life without fear of everyone around you. There are medicines that can help with paranoia too.

Now, run along.

As to the technicals, I suppose anything could happen, yet there is no guarantee it will.

How's that for deep words of wisdom?

lol!

None of us know what WILL happen to the stock market. We can have educated guesses, yes. I would like to think that the government has learned things from the Depression and that they are intelligent enough to learn from past history. I don't think they really want to see America go down the tubes.

Anyway, I am not a politician nor an economist. I am sure there are people out there who have a better understanding of things than I do.

Feel free to drop by more often. :)

When you have FNM FRE basically buying 80% of the country's mortgages and having a mandate from the Dems in congress Wall Street just perpetuated a situation created by Washington.

Google the Community Reinvestment Act and find out banks were forced not to give loans to those who could not repay.

Dems blocked a bill in 2003 that would limit the powers of FNM and FRE. Barney Frank and other Dems blocked that bill, they said it would hinder the countries ability to get affordable housing...lol Thanks Dems and Barney Frank.

President Bush's bailout is just as bad, guess the common denominator here...THE US GOVERNMENT.

Remember Obama was #2 on FNM and FRE money list...

Get government out of the equation, they screw everything up.

We have better times ahead, history shows this.

great post, great timing. What TG is explaining is real, and it's going on everywhere.

I just read a story about a man that shot and killed his entire family (6 people, including young kids and himself) over financial problems.

For the haters: things may be going good for certain people here, but things can change on a dime and you might need this kind of "pep talk" later on. People just need to help each other.

Trading Goddess said...

You know, even I need a pep talk once in a while...

Quite an Inspirational message , T.G. ! It's something that everyone needs to hear ! I can tell you have a big heart , you never try to sell us anything on your blog , you just report on your activities and impressions of the market. As bad as it is ,(the market, not the blog) it is NOTHING compared to the great Depression, and I think you offered constructive directions.Keep on kickin' out the positivity !
BTW, it's hilarious to hear people blame the democrats when McCain's entire campaign is made up of paid lobbyists incl. his campaign manager, who up to a month ago was a paid($200k) lobbyist for, (yup),
Fannie and Freddie. Cheers !

Trading Goddess said...

Opalcutter,

Thank you for your kind words! It is truly appreciated, more than you know.

opal, Obama was #2 behind Clinton in funds received by FNM and FRE. FNM's CEO who ran the GSE into the ground is Obama's Senior economic advisor...

Come on both parties are screwing you over.

TG,
Thanks a lot for the nice post. When everything is rosy, someone needs to show the flaws that might hamper the future. Just like that, when everything is gloomy, someone needs to show the rays of hope that one can go for. This is a really useful post and I really appreciate the efforts to put it together.
>>Ask for help...
This advice is really useful - not many people understand the power of asking but merely asking can get a lot of help than one can think of.

Socialists... hmmmm... I never really checked into the idea.

Here is what I found:

"Socialism does not mean government or state ownership. It does not mean a closed party-run system without democratic rights. Those things are the very opposite of socialism.

"Socialism," as the American Socialist Daniel De Leon defined it, "is that social system under which the necessaries of production are owned, controlled and administered by the people, for the people, and under which, accordingly, the cause of political and economic despotism having been abolished, class rule is at end. That is socialism, nothing short of that." And we might add, nothing more than that!

Remember: If it does not fit this description, it is not socialism—no matter who says different. Those who claim that socialism existed and failed in places like Russia and China simply do not know the facts.

Socialism will be a society in which the things we need to live, work and control our own lives—the industries, services and natural resources—are collectively owned by all the people, and in which the democratic organization of the people within the industries and services is the government. Socialism means that government of the people, for the people and by the people will become a reality for the first time."

Interesting.

Opalcutter5,

We are much closer, yes!

A lot of people are helping their neighbors out, giving them small jobs, donating food and clothing, daycare services, price breaks in repair services, etc. This really CAN make a difference, no matter if it is a "small thing" we do.

Nice to see you come back here to this post btw. As Market Speculator likes to often remind me, we can learn from the past. :)
